'Homosexual Legalisation Won’t Happen Under Nana Addo's Watch' - NPP MP

Member of Parliament for the people Nsawam-Adoagyiri in the Eastern Region, Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh has categorically stated that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will never condone homosexuality in Ghana. According to the Chairman for the Parliament Select Committee on Foreign Affairs, homosexuality will not happen under the watch of President Akufo Addo as others are envisaging in the response given by the President. Speaking on Okay FM’s "Ade Akye Abia" Morning Show, Hon. Annoh-Dompreh said the response by President Akufo-Addo regarding the issue of homosexuality was diplomatic considering the question put to him by the Journalist. In an interview with Aljazeera’s Jane Dutton, the president said the country's culture and tradition for now does not allow the legalisation of homosexuality, but was quick to add that if public opinion changes, the law may just be amended. “This is a social, cultural issue, I don’t believe that in Ghana so far, a sufficiently strong coalition has emerged which is having that impact on public opinion that will say ‘change it, let’s now have a new paradigm in Ghana.’ “At the moment, I don’t feel, I don’t see that in Ghana there is that strong current of opinion that is saying this is something we need to deal with. It is not so far a matter that is on the agenda,” he added. His remarks have stoked a huge debate in the country as some anti-homosexual campaigners appear not enthused insisting homosexual practice is anathema to the country’s religious and social cultural beliefs. The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) is even demanding that government states in clear terms the country’s stance on homosexuality. Commenting on this, the NPP MP posited that there was no ambiguity in the President's assertions when he (Akufo Addo) stated that the country’s socio-cultural behaviour frowns on the practice of homosexuality. He assured the CCG and others that "the President will not entertain homosexuality"; adding that “Ghanaians should wait and see if it will ever happen”.
