In a letter dated 30th April 2024, THE MINISTRY OF CHIEFTANCY AND RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS justified the practice of chiefs being asked to stand up to greet the president.
In the letter, which was signed by the Honourable minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng, the practice, he said, "stems from our commitment to upholding and preserving Ghanaian cultural values, including the principles of respect and hierarchy."
He however debunked the explanation given to the video involving the president and the Gonja overlord.
BRIEF HISTORY
Recently, the president together with his bodyguard was seen commanding chiefs to stand up and greet him. This was subsequently followed by a drama that ensued at the Yagbonwura's palace when the overlord of the Gonja land allegedly refused to stand up to greet the president. In no uncertain terms, the former president John Dramani Mahama has condemned this act. He said, "It should be a matter of serious consternation for political watchers."
