How to Retrieve Abandoned Vehicles and Initiate an Insurance Claim After Heavy Rains?

Thousands of UAE residents were forced to abandon their vehicles on roads and parking lots due to heavy rains.

As the flood waters recede, insurance experts advise vehicle owners to take the proper steps to retrieve their abandoned vehicles.

Raphael Daniel, auto insurance manager at Abu Dhabi-based Secure Insurance Brokers LLC, said, "If the vehicle is in good working condition, the owner can always go and retrieve it. If the policy allows it, they can also call for a recovery vehicle at the insurer's expense."

Raphael Daniel warned that if the vehicle remains abandoned at the scene after the road has been cleared, either intentionally or unintentionally, the government will impound the vehicle and fine the owner.

Ashmy Arackal, head of claims at InsuranceMarket, says: "Owners can also take advantage of the roadside assistance benefit, which allows insurance company-designated repair stores to provide free towing services."

Alternatively, car owners can contact the police, who will provide contact details of private rescue service providers. Depending on the type of rescue and distance, the cost could be as much as Dh500 or more.

Ashmy Arackal strongly advises vehicle owners not to attempt to start a vehicle that is submerged in water, as this could negatively affect the claim.

How do I file an insurance claim?

Once the vehicle is recovered, the claims process begins.

You will need to report the incident to the police and complete vehicle and license registration to submit a claim," says Raphael Daniel. The insurance company will then either assess the damage directly or instruct the owner to take the car to an approved workshop."

Ashmy Arackal says, "The insurance company will determine the coverage based on the repair matter and photographs of the workshop. Depending on the estimated cost of repairs, they may have a crew come in to further inspect the vehicle."
