ORGANIZED LABOUR GOES ON STRIKE !!!

Ten labour unions in Ghana, including the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), have embarked on a strike to protest the proposed sale of 60 per cent of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) shares in four hotels.

The strike, which began today, has brought activities in various sectors to a halt, including education, healthcare, and public services. The labour unions are demanding the dissolution of the SSNIT Board and the resignation of top management of the pension fund manager.

According to the labour unions, the sale of the hotels is a "misguided" decision that will deprive SSNIT of a significant source of income and threaten the security of pension funds. They argue that the sale is not in the best interest of workers and pensioners.

The SSNIT Board has, however, terminated the process of selling the hotels following the pressure from the unions. In a statement, the Board said it had listened to the concerns of the labour unions and had decided to halt the sale.

Despite this, the labour unions have vowed to continue with the strike until their demands are met. The Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa is also calling for the board and the management of SSNIT, NPRA as well as the Minister for Employment and Minister for Agriculture to be sacked.

The strike is expected to continue until the demands of the labour unions are met. The development has sparked concerns about the impact on the economy and the welfare of workers and pensioners.
