WhatsApp, the world’s leading messaging app, is developing a new feature that could significantly alter how the platform functions. Traditionally, WhatsApp has relied on contact numbers as a core requirement for connecting users, but this may soon change.
According to a report from TechDaily, WhatsApp is working on a feature that will enable users to create unique usernames for their profiles. These usernames could allow users to chat with others without needing to exchange phone numbers. However, for now, this feature will be exclusive to WhatsApp Web. As the feature is still in development, WhatsApp is focused on refining its design, with recent updates to WhatsApp Web showcasing a new interface, highlighting the company’s commitment to perfecting the feature before its official release.
WhatsApp is considering a major update that will allow users to create unique usernames, similar to those on other social media platforms. This new feature will enable users to select a username, provided it isn't already taken, and is expected to be included in a future app update. Unlike platforms like Discord, where usernames include tags or discriminators, WhatsApp usernames will be completely unique, ensuring that each user has a one-of-a-kind identifier, eliminating any potential confusion or duplication.
During the setup process, users will have the option to choose an available username, which will serve as their unique identifier on the platform. This new approach enhances privacy and simplifies the process of connecting with others by allowing users to create a personalized online presence without the need to share their phone number.
Even with a username in place, those who already have your phone number will still be able to find and contact you on WhatsApp. However, by setting a username, you gain an additional layer of privacy, as only people who know your username or phone number will be able to initiate conversations with you, giving you more control over who can reach you and further safeguarding your personal information.
The introduction of usernames on WhatsApp will provide users with an added level of privacy, according to reports. Currently, this feature is in the development phase and is expected to be released to beta testers in an upcoming app update. The company may also allow users to connect with others simply by entering their username within the app, eliminating the need to know their phone numbers.
Additionally, the report indicates that the username feature will be accessible within the app’s settings, with a dedicated section in WhatsApp Settings & Profile. Although WhatsApp has been working on this feature for some time, it remains under development, and specific details about its release date and availability are still uncertain.
The feature is undergoing thorough testing and refinement to ensure a seamless, secure, and error-free experience that meets WhatsApp's high standards before it officially launches. Consequently, the exact timeline for its rollout has not yet been revealed.
In the meantime, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that billions of WhatsApp users can now edit a message within 15 minutes of sending it. This feature is being rolled out globally and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks. To use it, simply long-press on a sent message and select 'Edit' from the menu, available for up to 15 minutes after sending the message.
