Dubai to Plant Over 100 Million Mangroves Along Coastline

The Dubai Mangrove Project, led by URB, the developer behind the Dubai Coral Reef and The Loop projects, aims to transform Dubai’s coastline by planting over 100 million mangrove trees.

Spanning 72 kilometers of coastline, this initiative aligns with the goals of Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan. Mangroves are known for their unique carbon sequestration abilities and their role in protecting coastal areas from erosion. Each tree can absorb approximately 12.3 kilograms of carbon dioxide annually, meaning the entire project has the potential to sequester 1.23 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, equivalent to the emissions from 260,000 cars.

MANGROVES A mangrove is a shrub or tree that grows mainly in coastal saline or brackish water. Mangroves grow in an equatorial climate, typically along coastlines and tidal rivers. They have special adaptations to take in extra oxygen and to remove salt, which allow them to tolerate conditions that would kill most plants. The term is also used for tropical coastal vegetation consisting of such species. Mangroves are taxonomically diverse, as a result of convergent evolution in several plant families. They occur worldwide in the tropics and subtropics and even some temperate coastal areas, mainly between latitudes 30° N and 30° S, with the greatest mangrove area within 5° of the equator.

The Mangrove Center will be established alongside a botanical museum and a nature reserve center, becoming a major platform for research, education, and awareness in the future.
