Taiwanese internet celebrities jailed for spreading fake news in Cambodia

CAMBODIA - Taiwanese internet personalities "Good Night Chick" and "Ah Hao" have been handed a two-year prison sentence and fined 4 million Cambodian dollars each (approximately 1,000 U.S. dollars) by the Sihanoukville Provincial Primary Court for inciting social unrest in Cambodia.

The court found the individuals, originally known as Chan Neng Chuan (31) and Lu Zu Xian (34), guilty of fabricating videos depicting human trafficking, abuse, rape, and illegal organ trade.

The ruling stems from incidents on February 12 and 13, where the duo staged fake scenarios, including being assaulted by security guards and claiming to be chased in Chinatown, Westport, while live-streaming on Facebook. Following a trial, the presiding judge invoked the Criminal Code, leading to the convictions and sentences.

In a press conference held yesterday afternoon, both individuals kneeled down and issued apologies, expressing a desire to rectify their mistakes by showcasing the real Cambodia through their social media platforms. However, Sihanoukville Governor Kok Tronglang emphasized the severity of their actions, stressing the need for legal accountability under Cambodian law.

Governor Tronglang asserted that the duo would serve their sentences before being deported, emphasizing the importance of upholding Cambodia's image and deterring similar acts of misinformation in the future.

The case underscores the growing challenges posed by false information spread on social media platforms and highlights the significance of ensuring the accuracy and integrity of online content. ALSO READ : GOOD NIGHT CHICK ARRESTED
