Police in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, have apprehended two Chinese nationals from Taiwan, including a Taiwanese internet personality known as "Goodnight Chick," for their involvement in producing fake videos aimed at tarnishing the reputation of Sihanoukville.
The arrest took place after authorities discovered that the suspects had deliberately fabricated and circulated videos suggesting the presence of ghosts in hotels and casinos across Sihanoukville.
These videos, shared on platforms like Jitterbug, garnered millions of likes and significantly harmed the city's image, deterring potential tourists from visiting.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the suspects began their deceptive campaign from the moment they arrived at the Cambodian airport, intentionally creating misleading content to misrepresent Sihanoukville.
During the arrest, police seized ghost masks and video equipment from the suspects, providing further evidence of their involvement in the fraudulent scheme.
Sihanoukville Governor Guo Zongren and Police Chief Surota held a press conference to address the incident, emphasizing the severity of the misinformation spread by the suspects and its detrimental impact on the city's tourism industry.
The arrests serve as a reminder of the potential consequences of spreading false information online and highlight the importance of verifying sources before sharing content on social media platforms.
The incident has sparked concerns among locals, with some attributing the fake videos to witchcraft due to their misleading nature. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious online activities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
