Dubai is gearing up to become a bicycle-friendly city, aiming to promote cycling as a feasible and sustainable alternative mode of transportation.
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced plans to build a new bike lane that will run through Hessa Street, connecting Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills.
Stretching over 13.5 kilometers, this dedicated bike lane will traverse Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, designed exclusively for bicycles, scooters, and pedestrians.
The project will include upgrades to four major intersections along Hessa Street with Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road. Hessa Street's dual carriageway will be widened from two lanes to four, doubling its capacity to accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour.
The Hessa Street improvement project is a significant road infrastructure enhancement initiative aimed at meeting the needs of major residential and development communities such as Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha, and Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC).
RTA aims to increase the total length of bike lanes to 1,000 kilometers by 2030, up from the current 544 kilometers.
The expansion project will connect coastal areas like Jumeirah, Al Sufouh, and Dubai Marina with inland areas such as Al Barsha, Dubai Hills, and Nad Al Sheba, through Al Qudra, Seih Al Salam, and Nad Al Sheba.
