Do you remember the dreams you had when you first ventured abroad? Were you planning to return home after a few years? As time passes, have you achieved those dreams?
Years ago, when the idea of going abroad was mentioned, everyone's aspirations were lofty – the ultimate goal was to return home triumphant, proving success in foreign lands.
But the reality of thriving abroad is far from simple. Only those who have experienced it firsthand understand the helplessness and struggles of life in a foreign land.
The endless hours of overtime, the unfair treatment, and the constant pang of homesickness.
Many nights, gazing out the window at the unfamiliar lights and faces, one can't help but wonder how much longer this life must be endured, and why, despite all the efforts, the dream remains elusive.
Was the decision to go abroad the right one?
This question haunts many of us, yet the answer remains elusive. When we made the choice to leave, we had no inkling of the challenges that awaited us overseas.
Certainly, there are success stories of individuals who have returned home triumphant, but they are few and far between.
As for why some succeed while others are trapped in the monotony of life abroad, opinions vary.
Some attribute it to luck – a factor beyond one's control. While we can determine our efforts, choose our industry, and select our mentors, luck remains elusive.
Despite the hardships, there are those who venture abroad with the sole purpose of returning home one day.
Some carry the burden of debt and family expectations, working tirelessly day in and day out, while others watch their dreams shatter amidst the harsh realities of life abroad.
As an ordinary expatriate, I've witnessed a shift in mindset over the years. "Returning home" is seldom mentioned; instead, the focus is on finding fulfillment and comfort abroad.
Perhaps this change is a result of facing reality and coming to terms with our limitations. Opportunities abroad may be abundant, but they are reserved for the fortunate few.
The reality is that for most, going abroad does not change their status – an ordinary person abroad remains an ordinary person.
Dreams are beautiful, but reality is harsh. Thus, the right mindset is crucial when embarking on an overseas journey. While it may not guarantee wealth, it can certainly help avoid unnecessary pitfalls.
Some find solace in the misfortune of others, while others feel defeated when comparing their own lives to the perceived happiness and success of their peers.
In the end, it's easy to envy those who return home, but let's not forget to applaud ourselves – every expatriate who perseveres and thrives in a foreign land is truly remarkable.
Each of us has our own story, our own struggles, and our own victories. You may still be grappling with life's challenges, uncertain of the path ahead.
But remember, giving up guarantees nothing, while perseverance, though not always leading to success, ensures personal growth and resilience.
