Vanuatu passport not a talisman but a death wish - Chinese fugitive intercepted at Manila airport

Philippine Bureau of Immigration (BI) officials intercepted another foreign fugitive wanted by Chinese authorities for a series of economic crimes involving the country at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the BI said (Feb. 26).

In a report submitted to Immigration Director Norman Tansingco, BI's border control and intelligence division identified the fugitive as 42-year-old Liu Jiangtao, a Vanuatu passport holder. Liu Jiangtao.) The fugitive was intercepted by immigration officials on Feb. 21 while trying to board a Cebu Pacific Air flight to Singapore at Terminal 3 of the Manila International Airport.

The Border Control and Intelligence Division of the Bureau of Immigration (BCID) said Liu Jiangtao was at the immigration counter for exit formalities when the immigration officials who were processing him realized that the Bureau of Immigration (BI) had placed him on the list of aliens with outstanding watchlist orders (list of aliens with outstanding watchlist orders).

Joseph Cueto, deputy director of the Border Control and Intelligence Division, said, "Further verification by the on-duty immigration supervisor confirmed that the passenger was the same person as the one on the watchlist, so we arrested him and sent him to our Bureau of Immigration detention center in Taguig City."

A letter of Mutual Legal Assistance in International Criminal Matters (MLAIC) sent by the Chinese government to the Philippine government showed that Chinese prosecutors issued arrest warrants against 11 Chinese nationals, including Liu Jiangtao, for allegedly committing and absconding with a number of offenses, including fraud, violation of credit card regulations, misappropriation of funds, money laundering, and counterfeiting of registered trademarks, and sought the Philippine government's MLAIC assistance.
