Myanmar Authorities Crack Down on Online Gambling Operators, Detain Over 100 Individuals
In a targeted operation, Myanmar security forces swooped down on illicit online gambling operations in the San Sai (A) district of the eastern Shan State's "Big C" city. The raid, conducted behind the 1G1 Hotel, resulted in the apprehension of more than 100 individuals involved in running online gambling platforms.
The crackdown, which occurred on the night of February 22nd, saw authorities seizing a significant amount of equipment used for online gambling, including computers, vehicles, and motorcycles. Among those detained were both Thai and Chinese nationals, while Burmese citizens reportedly avoided arrest and were released.
The "Big C" city has gained notoriety for hosting numerous telecommunications fraud and online gambling companies.
This recent enforcement action follows discussions between Myanmar and Thai military leaders on January 12th, leading to a concerted effort to curb illegal activities in the region.
Questions linger regarding the operation's secrecy, with observers questioning whether authorities deliberately kept the raid under wraps to prevent any advance warnings to the targets. The crackdown underscores Myanmar's ongoing efforts to tackle illegal online activities and maintain law and order in the region.
